Electrospun Shape Memory Polymer Micro-/Nanofibers and Tailoring Their Roles for Biomedical Applications

Shape memory polymers (SMPs) as a relatively new class of smart materials have gained increasing attention in academic research and industrial developments (e.g., biomedical engineering, aerospace, robotics, automotive industries, textiles). SMPs can switch their shape, stiffness, size, structure upon being exposed to external stimuli. Electrospinning technique endow with micro-/nanocharacteristics for enhanced performance applications. Dynamically changing micro-/nanofibrous structures been widely investigated emulate the dynamical features ECM regulate cell behaviors. Structures such core-shell fibers, developed by coaxial electrospinning, also potential applications drug carriers artificial blood vessels. The clinical micro-/nanostructured SMP fibers include tissue regeneration, regulating behavior, growth templates, wound healing. This review presents molecular architecture SMPs, recent electrospinning techniques fabrication micro-/nanofibers, well future perspectives providing dynamic biomaterials structures.
